Dorset Cottages Garden Installation | Dorset

A Heritage Setting with a Modern Touch

Our brief was to create a fully functioning garden around a sympathetically restored group of listed buildings, a former stable block and a grooms’ cottage, delivering a very strict brief respecting the heritage and character of the estate.

The design embraced a traditional aesthetic, but required traditional and sustainable construction methods, ensuring the project was as practical and future proof as it was beautiful. Every decision was influenced by the property’s historic charm, its listed status and our client’s desire for a timeless yet welcoming outdoor space.

Building for the Future, Preserving the Past

One of the standout features of this project was the use of reclaimed materials throughout. From the paving to the planting structures, every element was selected for both its aesthetic and its ability to blend seamlessly into the historic setting.

We adopted fully permeable construction methods to support sustainable drainage and reduce surface water run-off. This is an essential consideration in rural locations such as this, where traditional drainage networks can be limited and flooding common. A Blue Green Urban tree pit detail was incorporated to support long-term tree health with the new trees contributing to the site’s biodiversity net gain.

• Reclaimed stone and chocolate block paving used for paths, terraces and walls, honouring the site’s heritage.
• Permeable surfacing techniques ensuring the garden works in harmony with its environment.
• Specialist tree planting with bespoke tree pit design for improved root growth and water management.
• Bespoke planting schemes designed to flourish in the local climate and complement the historic architecture.

Every step of the construction process was carried out with the utmost care to protect the fabric of the listed buildings, while delivering a garden that can be enjoyed for decades to come.

This project is a testament to the fact that heritage and modern environmental responsibility can work hand-in-hand, and when they do, the results are both functional and beautiful.
